Mags are equipable robotic companions that accompany hunters on their quests and help out in various ways. Mags can boost a player's stats, cast Resta, Shifta, and Deband on the player, and grant temporary invincibility. They can make or break a character's viability in later difficulties, so having one suited to your class and play style is crucial.
Mag basics
Feeding items to a Mag causes it to grow and eventually acquire an attack technique called a Photon Blast that can be utilized in battle. When a Mag has evolved at least once, it will be able to save up photons discharged when attacking or being attacked by enemies. The amount stored is indicated by the yellow Photon Blast gauge. Photon blasts can be chained together to increase their potency.
A Mag's stats will increase or decrease when certain tools are fed to it. Varying slightly, all mates increase POW, all fluids increase MIND, antidote and antiparalysis increases DEX. A Mag's level will increase when any of its four stat bar's value equals 100. The maximum level a Mag can reach is 200.
- DEF - Defensive stat. Each level increases DFP by 1 point. Each MAG has a base DEF of 5.
- POW - Offensive stat. Each level increases ATP by 2 points.
- DEX - Accuracy stat. Each level increases ATA by 0.5 points.
- MIND - Mental stat. Each level increases MST by 2 points.
- Synchro - Attachment between the player and a Mag. Affects the strength of offensive Photon Blasts and also affects the rate of some triggers. The maximum synchro level is 120%. Decreases by 5% upon character death. Note that Synchro does not effect the Photon Blast Gauge gain rate.
- IQ - Intelligence of a Mag. Affects the level of Shifta, Deband, and Resta from triggers (base level 1, +1 level for each 40 IQ rounded down) or when using the Mylla & Youlla Photon Blast (base level 1, +1 level for each 10 IQ rounded down). The maximum IQ level is 200.
Mag triggers
There are three different triggers which may have a chance to trigger a Mag Effect:
- 100 PB - When the mag reaches a full PB bar.
- 1/10 HP - When the player is damaged by more than 20% of their max HP in one frame and is taken down to 10% HP or below. (Does not have to be a single hit, Berserk sacrificial works for this trigger)
- Boss Room - When the player enters a Boss area. Boss does not have to be alive for this to trigger.
Mag effects
There are three different effects which may be triggered when a Mag Trigger is successful:
- - Invulnerability for 30 seconds, enemies cannot hit you. Berserk and Spirit sacrificials and other weapon specials still reduce your HP/TP like usual, and TP reducing effects such as Chaos Bringer's Spirit Cannon attack still work. Dark Falz's Soul Bind/Soul Leach attacks will still drain your HP and can kill you.
Synchro triggers
There are various triggers which are affected positively or negatively by Synchro. These are either "positive" or "negative" triggers, represented by (+) and (-) respectively.
Depending on Synchro, the mag is boosted by the below table.
Synchro | Rate Boost |
---|---|
0-30% | +0% |
31-60% | +15% |
61-80% | +25% |
81-100% | +30% |
101-120% | +35% |
Positive trigger
A "positive" (+) trigger has its rate increased depending on the synchro of the mag. This boost is added directly onto the base rate of the mag.
For example, if a Nidra has 101-120% Synchro, its boss room trigger will be boosted to 85% activation rate (50% base rate and 35% synchro boost).
Negative trigger
A "negative" (-) trigger ignores the base rate of the mag, and only considers the Synchro Boost. This means any negative trigger has an effective base rate of 0%.
For example, if a Sato has 61-80% Synchro, its 100 PB trigger will be only 25% activation rate, instead of its standard 50% rate.
Photon Blast
Photon blast increases based on damage dealt and received. Most special attacks do not build photon blast, though some unique special attacks (eg. Vjaya, Dark Flow) do.
PB gain from attacking = damage / (character_level * 15.0)
PB gain from defending = (damage * 20.0) / (character_level * 15.0)

Third evolution mags
Any common Mag will evolve into these Mags when fed starting from level 50, and every five levels beyond that. You can switch characters to allow it to evolve again with one feed during an evolution level. This is useful for switching feed tables or cell usage.

Cell mags
Cell Mags are fourth evolution Mags that are obtained through the usage of a Mag cell on another Mag. Most cell Mags evolve from third evolution Mags. Most Mags that have reached fourth evolution cannot evolve again. In several instances Mags can evolve from fourth evolution Mags or a Mag.
All cell Mags use feeding table 7.
