Behavior/Mechanics
Upon spawning, a Dark Belra will slowly walk toward its target, pausing every so often to fire its arm as a projectile. The arm projectile deals high damage, pierces, and can inflict
Confusion (Ultimate difficulty only with a 10% chance). The arm projectile can also damage other monsters. Once it reaches melee range, a Dark Belra will swipe at its target with both arms, dealing high damage with a chance to inflict
Paralysis.
In Ultimate difficulty, an Indi Belra will remain in place and rapidly fire arm projectiles at its target.
Running in a circle around a Dark Belra will cause it to become confused (not the status condition) and momentarily cease attacking or following its target.
Attacks that deal sufficiently high damage in one blow will cause a Dark Belra to flinch, but otherwise attacks will not flinch it nor interrupt its attacks.
Strategy
Dark Belra's arm attack does not hit targets directly in front of it; standing still will cause them to shoot to either side. This behavior was different in early versions of PSO Episode I & II.
Despite this, large spawns that include one or multiple Dark Belras (such as those found in
Endless Nightmare #4 or
Random Attack Xrd Stage) can still pose problems if the party does not pay careful attention to their positioning.
To mitigate the possibility of regularly taking large amounts of damage from incoming Dark Belra arms, the party should be aware of which Dark Belras have targeted which players, while also paying particular attention to the ones targeting themselves.
When possible, targeted players should position themselves in such a way that Belra fire is drawn away from other players, as while standing still prevents the targeted player from being struck, other players along the same line between a Belra and its target will take damage if they are even slightly askew, which can be detrimental to the party (especially for players utilizing Berserk to maximize their damage or Hunters utilizing
Dark Flow).
If this positioning is established, Belras can be treated as much lower-priority targets, as it is even possible for targeted players to readjust their position between the alternating arms without risking damage, enabling the party to focus more heavily on enemies such as Chaos Sorcerers or Chaos Bringers.
Otherwise, Dark Belras are high-priority targets for Rangers using
Frozen Shooter or Androids using
freeze traps.
Additionally, a player can intentionally draw aggro by positioning within melee range of a Belra at the time of spawning and may maintain this aggro indefinitely by staying within melee range. This can be done from any side, allowing for the player to force the Belra to slowly turn completely around before performing any attacks and even continue this behavior by circling further around.
Jellen can heavily reduce damage from all Belra attacks. Spawn configurations of many spread out Belras as well as the aforementioned strategy of staying still encourages a Force to utilize
Glide Divine for additional debuff range. In Ultimate, level 30
Jellen,
Deband, and a character with sufficiently high DFP may result in preventing a knockdown, less than 100 damage taken, less than 10 damage taken, or entirely blocking damage from each attack.
