In Battle mode, players battle one another by rules set by the party leader. To play Battle mode, it must be selected during party creation in the lobby. At the beginning of each game, the rules set by the team leader will be displayed; each player will be positioned at one of four starting locations. Players compete to defeat as many of their opponents as possible within the time limit. Certain weapons, items, equipment, Mags, and techniques may be unusable, depending on the selected rules. A player falls when their HP drops to 0, and the fallen player will respawn at a random location on the map. The game is over when time expires.

Challenge mode stages are available for both Episode 1 and 2, with each Episode having 9 and 5 stages respectively. To play Challenge mode, it must be selected during party creation in the lobby. Parties must clear stages sequentially in order to progress. At the start of each Challenge stage, all levels, equipment, and learned techniques will be reset to the stage's default. Returning to Pioneer 2 is not possible until a stage is either failed or cleared. Each player is given a set number of Scape Dolls; these are the only way party members can be revived. The whole team will be sent back to the Hunter's Guild if the HP of one of the participating member drops to zero and they have run out of Scape Dolls.

Battle mode is a mode where players may engage in PvP gameplay against each other according to different sets of predetermined rules. Battle mode must be selected during party creation at the Visual Lobby counter, with battle rulesets being chosen at the Hunter's Guild.

At the start of each Battle round, the rules set by the party leader will be displayed, and each player will spawn in at one of four starting locations. Players then compete to defeat their opponents as many times as possible within the time limit. Depending on the rules, certain weapons, frames, barriers, Tools, Mags, and even Techniques may be unusable. A character is defeated when their HP reaches 0, and the defeated character will then respawn at a random location on the map. The round is over when time expires.

Challenge

Main article: Challenge

Challenge mode is a game mode available for Episode 1 and 2 where players must complete timed "stages" (composed of the various areas of the game) in sequential order by progressing through them similar to regular play, but under the following restrictions:

  • Character level, equipment, and learned techniques at start are predetermined per stage;
  • Returning to Pioneer 2 is not possible;
  • Any player's death (without a Tool icon.pngScape Doll in the inventory) will cause all players to fail.

Challenge mode must be selected during party creation at the Visual Lobby counter, with individual stages being initiated from the Hunter's Guild. Players who are able to complete every stage of challenge mode will receive rewards upon completion of the last stage, with the rewards varying depending on Episode cleared and total clear time.

Main article: Anguish

Anguish mode is an additional tier of difficulties that can be accessed once a character has reached Ultimate difficulty (level 80+). Monster behaviors remain unchanged from Ultimate mode, but receive stat increases based on the level of Anguish selected. In exchange for stronger monsters, certain boosts (e.g. EXP, drop rate, etc.) are applied while playing on Anguish mode. Further details can be viewed on the Anguish page.
